In 1986, National Community Development Week was created to bring nationwide attention to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program through grassroots support. The main objective of National Community Development Week is providing education on the importance of CDBG, its impact and the need for increased program funding.

Governor Jared Polis’s Office, alongside the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), has recognized this campaign and proclaimed the week of April 10-14, 2023 as National Community Development Week in Colorado.

Community Development at DOLA and National Community Development Week

By offering a variety of technical and financial resources pertaining to land use planning, economic growth, and sustainable community development that fosters resilience, the Community Development Office empowers Colorado communities. The Community Development Office offers innovative solutions to assist local governments and their partners in resolving complicated issues through training, technical assistance, and resources.

The Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) administers the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for non-entitlement municipalities and counties to carry out community development activities. Eligible uses of funds include acquisition, design/engineering, construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation or installation of public improvements or public facilities. Examples of projects include sewer and water systems, commercial streetscape improvements, community centers, food banks, shelters, health clinics etc.

The Division of Housing (DOH), within the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA), and Foothills Regional Housing will be hosting an event in Golden, CO highlighting the Flats at Ford Street project in celebration of Community Development Week. This project emerged from the CDBG program in Colorado.
