After 15 years of dedicated service, Alison George, Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) Division of Housing Director, has announced her retirement effective October 15, 2025. George’s work and commitment have significantly impacted the state’s housing landscape, creating or preserving almost 20,000 affordable housing units, over 2,500 homeownership units, and supporting more than 64,000 Coloradans with emergency housing assistance since state fiscal year 2020-2021 — and thousands more Coloradans during her tenure.

Since joining DOLA in 2010, George has been known as a leader with a deep sense of purpose, humility, and unwavering commitment to the people of Colorado. She has been a steady presence during times of rapid change. Under her leadership, the Division has grown to 192 employees today (from 38 employees in 2010).

“We are saying goodbye to one of the most passionate individuals I’ve had the pleasure of working with in the housing space,” said Maria De Cambra, Executive Director of DOLA. “Alison has always advocated about the profound effect of providing a safe, stable home for those who need it most. Our state will be forever grateful to Alison for everything she’s given to the Division of Housing, DOLA and the people of Colorado.”

“Working at the Division of Housing with tremendous thought partners, dedicated and passionate staff, and leaders has been a treasured honor for me,” said George. “Our partners have great dreams and vision, and as a State partner, we support making those visions a reality and turn dreams into homes.”

George’s career highlights include:

  • Navigating uncharted territory: Proactively addressing the tightening of housing markets during the great recession and successfully leading the Division of Housing through the COVID pandemic
  • Significant fiscal responsibility: Skillfully handling being the largest recipient of stimulus dollars in the state ($1.5B)
  • Meeting the needs of Colorado’s most vulnerable: The Division successfully stood up emergency rental programs like the Property Owner Preservation program and the Emergency Rental Assistance programs that have served over 64,000 Colorado households. Under her leadership, the Division launched Colorado’s permanent rental assistance program, Colorado Emergency Rental Assistance (CERA).
  • Proactive Leader in Housing: George serves as the Board President, Council of State Community Development Agencies (COSCDA) and the Division was selected as the lead agency for the Homeless Management Information System and the Colorado Balance of State provider by its peers.Where she has also advocated for the importance of HUD programs here in Colorado

As George prepares to retire, DOLA will be posting the position of Division of Housing Director in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition and continued excellence at DOLA’s Division of Housing. The Department will be actively recruiting for the position, and all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. The position will be posted this summer, and the job announcement and application will be found on DOLA’s Career Page.
